A White Dish Story

Many years ago I bought a collection of white dishes from a very well known and expensive, I should add, brand, thinking that how could a white plate become old. I thought plain can never be either dated nor too popular to loose it’s appeal. Little did I know that white plates will be all over the place and the thing that is being imitated right left and center, from the biggest names all the way to cheap knock offs from you know where. WHITE PLATES BECAME THE IN THING AND WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED ?

Recently in collaboration with Lenox, Donna Karan launched her own version of yet another white plate, and she says: “Our new tableware & giftware collection is divine, and truly unlike anything out there.”  I can manage to overlook the “divine” part, but unlike anything out there ?

So, my question is do you want more white plates and are these plates unlike anything out there ?

Do we need them? - of course not- the market does seem saturated but don't feel bad. A set of "good white dishes", like yours, will have a weight and a finish that will make them timeless. Think of them as foundation pieces to build off from!

My mom talked me into white dishes when I got married 20 years ago. She was (is) smarter than me!

Well, some things -like white dishes- are never too old: especially if they are of a good quality.
I'm seriously considering to use my grandma one century old collection of dishes.
So, I truly believe that they are never too old ;)

Ciao!

To be honest - I have two loves: I am collecting English teapots and "old" English bone china from the Royal Albert collections because I love romantic tablescapes.
The other love I have is for simple Japanese dishes, white ones as well as handmade and painted China ware - the one with the ricecorn inlays.
I think you can never go wrong with completely white and simple dishes because the combinations with other more sophisticated and colourful ones are endless.
And I must confess - I don't give a penny to whether something is trendy or not and I could not care less about brands. I am using high end porcellaine as well as fleamarket finds which often are the best anyway...

Jimmy,..I think you feel a little cheated, perhaps..?? :)
hard to be chic and cool when everyone and their brother has what you presumed to be timeless style..
what's the point of having something special when it ceases to be "special"...(things can't be special if everyone has one...just my observation..)
pack them away and find something really hideous, I mean avant garde to use in their place...
let us know what you come up with..

I think it's best to ignore everything Donna Karan says. Especially if the words "divine" or "barbra" are involved.

White plates are fantastic. High end, low end (my own set is vintage diner ware) - whichever.

Well, they are rather divine, but I still think that's an obnoxious thing to say about something you've designed. So much for humility.

They are not, however, unlike anything I've ever seen before. Donna Karan needs to Google Eva Zeisel.

I most decidedly do not need another white plate. I don't mind them, but they ain't revving my engine. I haven't seen one in a long time that has.
